Bulgarian tax declaration deadlines and legislative updates
Overview
The Bulgarian National Revenue Agency (NRA) has issued notifications regarding tax declaration deadlines and legislative proposals. As of late September 2026, taxpayers have until September 30 to submit corrective declarations for annual income or corporate tax filings to address discrepancies found by the agency.
The NRA specifically reminded individuals of the requirement to declare foreign income and assets held during 2025, including foreign real estate, shares, and company interests. The agency noted that through international information exchange, it receives data from foreign tax administrations regarding the property of Bulgarian residents. To mitigate double taxation, the agency noted that bilateral tax treaties or a ‘common tax credit’ method will be applied.
Concurrently, the Ministry of Finance has proposed legislative changes to adjust tax penalties. These include increasing fines for late personal income tax declarations and for providing false information. The proposals also suggest making food vouchers taxable income and introducing a new ‘child development’ relief to allow parents to deduct certain educational and health-related expenses from their tax base.
In October 2026, the NRA announced an extension for the third-quarter 2026 electronic tax declaration deadline. Originally set for October 31, the deadline was moved to November 2 because the final day of October falls on a Saturday. This deadline applies to various filings, including advance taxes on income from non-labor relationships (such as rent), taxes on dividends, royalties, and interest, as well as VAT-registered enterprises reporting specific accounting data.
