Todor Angelov has been elected president of the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation following an extraordinary general assembly at the Vasil Levski National Sports Academy. Angelov, running as the opposition candidate, secured his position with 94 votes. The election resulted in the removal of the previous president, five-time world champion Stanka Zlateva, and the dismissal of the existing Management Board. The proceedings were characterized by tension; Zlateva criticized the sporting environment, citing “hypocrisy and betrayal,” which led several supporting clubs to walk out of the assembly in protest. A new Management Board has been established, including prominent figures such as Armen Nazaryan and Grisha Ganchev. Supported by figures such as Valentin Yordanov, Angelov stated his intention to prioritize youth wrestling investment and seek unity within the federation. His immediate priorities include working to reintegrate CSKA wrestlers, such as Olympic champion Semen Novikov, into the national team for upcoming international competitions. United World Wrestling (UWW) has officially recognized Angelov’s leadership, noting that the election results were validated by both the UWW and the Bulgarian Olympic Committee on October 19, 2026. Following this recognition, the UWW has ceased all communication with the team led by Stanka Zlateva. The UWW described Zlateva’s team’s continued use of official email credentials and data access as “unauthorized.” This dispute follows Zlateva’s protests regarding the removal of wrestler Aik Mnatsakanyan and coach Andrey Stoynov from the Athena system and the denial of their accreditation for the World Championships in Astana.
