Burkina Faso has implemented several initiatives under its 2026-2028 agro-pastoral, hydraulic, and fisheries offensive to bolster food sovereignty and support the livestock sector. In late August 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries launched the ‘Zero poultry coop empty’ operation. This 5 program, costing over 1.07 billion ~~FCFA program~~ FCFA, aims to increase national poultry production by providing support kits to 500 farmers. These kits include improved breed chicks, feed, veterinary products, and health monitoring services for modern poultry, as well as adult birds and feed for traditional poultry. The initiative seeks to reactivate inactive farms and establish new ones to reduce reliance on imports. Following this, the government introduced a measure to provide 15,000 tonnes of cereals to feed producers at subsidized prices. Launched in ~~Bobo-Dioulasso,~~ Bobo-Dioulasso by the Minister Delegate in charge of Animal Resources, Dr. Amadou Dicko, this initiative seeks to reduce the cost of animal feed, with producers reporting price reductions of more than 50%. ~~Officials~~ Officials, including SONAGESS Director General Alfred Kola, emphasized that these cereal stocks, sourced from SONAGESS field collections, are strictly intended for livestock and poultry feed and must not be diverted for human consumption.
