Security forces in Burkina Faso have conducted several operations targeting smuggling and the trafficking of prohibited goods. In late August 2026, the Saponé Territorial Gendarmerie Brigade intercepted a shipment of prohibited pharmaceuticals near Targho, leading to three arrests and investigations into potential money laundering. Following this, the National Police of the Nakambé region conducted WIBGA 2 and WIBGA 3 security missions, involving patrols and checkpoints in localities such as Tenkodogo, Koupéla, Pouytenga, Dialgaye, and Garango. In Boulgou province, police dismantled five smuggling rings, seizing cement, herbicides, oil, pharmaceuticals, and food items valued at approximately 29,000,000 FCFA. In Kourittenga province, six criminal groups were dismantled, resulting in the seizure of explosives, detonators, cyanide, and pesticides valued at over 53,000,000 FCFA. Additionally, the 9th District Police Station in Ouagadougou dismantled an urban network specializing in armed robbery and money laundering in the Yagma and Bassinko neighborhoods. On September 29, 2026, the National Police Anti-Drug Unit dismantled a structured drug trafficking network in Ouagadougou, seizing approximately 86 kilograms of cannabis, motorcycles, illicit alcohol, contraband cigarettes, psychotropic products, and cash. Investigations indicated the group sourced supplies from a neighboring country to supply gold mining sites in the Balé, Sanguié, Bam, and Boulgou provinces. On the same date, the National Coordination for the Fight Against Fraud (CNLF) intercepted 2,200 drums of cyanide in Bobo-Dioulasso, valued at 330 million FCFA, which were found concealed under a shipment of mineral water. In late September and early October 2026, further seizures were reported. On September 22, authorities near the Togo border in Cinkansé discovered 35 cartons of ‘YES’ brand cigarettes valued at approximately 5.6 million CFA francs. On October 2, the Dialgaye territorial brigade intercepted a vehicle containing roughly 36 cartons of the same cigarette brand.
