Burkina Faso has initiated large-scale civic and patriotic mobilization programs for its citizens. The government recently concluded the second edition of its Mandatory Patriotic Immersion (IPO), a month-long training program involving approximately 65,000 young people. President Ibrahim Traoré described the initiative as an “school of life” designed to instill discipline, civic responsibility, and solidarity to support the nation’s revolution. Building on these efforts, the Groupement d’Intérêt Public-Programme National de Volontariat au Burkina Faso (GIP-PNVB) announced plans to expand national volunteering. The organization aims to recruit one million national volunteer reservists over the next five years, targeting 200,000 recruits annually. These volunteers are intended to assist the state during health emergencies, natural disasters, and humanitarian crises, as well as community development projects, though officials clarified they are not intended to replace professional defense or emergency services. The patriotic immersion model has recently been extended to specific professional sectors. In September 2026, Minister of Health Robert Kargougou oversaw a 10-day training session for a second wave of health workers recruited under the Presidential Initiative for Health (IPS). This cohort of 900 participants—comprising 600 women and 300 men—underwent a curriculum combining military and civic instruction, including combat first aid, shooting, and physical training. To accommodate the female participants, the training site at the National Institute for Training of Education Personnel (INFPE) provided childcare services for approximately 200 children. Additionally, the GIP-PNVB, in partnership with the National Bureau of Great Projects (BN-GPB), launched three integrated initiatives to recruit 10,000 volunteers this year. These programs focus on road maintenance and rural accessibility using the ‘DO-NOU’ technique, hygiene and sanitation, and the promotion of active citizenship and social cohesion. Recent mobilization efforts included a reforestation activity at the Nafona Regional Scientific High School in Banfora, where volunteers planted 78 medicinal plants to support environmental preservation.
