Florida authorities are employing various strategies to manage the invasive Burmese python population in the Everglades, which poses a threat to native wildlife. Efforts include financial incentives such as the annual Florida Python Challenge, which offers cash prizes for snake removal, and year-round programs involving paid contractors and organizations like the Python Action Team Removing Invasive Constrictors (PATRIC). In addition to physical removal efforts, researchers are integrating technology to improve management. A multi-year study has identified specific tree species used by pythons for resting and reproduction based on the snakes' size and age. To enhance these findings, University of Florida researchers are developing a machine learning tool. This tool uses geospatial data and information collected from mobile apps by contractors and citizen scientists to help agencies target large, egg-producing females more effectively. Expanding on these removal efforts, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) have implemented specific financial incentive structures for contracted agents. In authorized zones across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Collier counties, agents can earn between $14 and $30 per hour. The program also provides bonuses for specific captures, such as $50 for pythons up to four feet long, with additional funds for every foot thereafter. To further disrupt reproduction, the district offers $200 for verifying active nests, alongside monthly performance bonuses ranging from $300 to $1,500 for meeting capture targets.
