A series of targeted shootings against buses has occurred in the Lima region of Peru. Peru, appearing to be linked to extortion or demands for ‘cupos’ (protection money). On August 13, two assailants on a motorcycle attacked a Nuevo Horizonte bus in the Ate district. One attacker boarded the vehicle and fired multiple up to seven shots at the driver, Julio Enrique Serra Centurión, who was placed in intensive care, care at Hospital Dos de Mayo, while a 14-year-old passenger was also wounded. This attack followed a formal complaint by the transport company regarding extortion by criminal gangs. On August 18, a Cruz del Sur interprovincial bus was targeted in a similar manner at the intersection of Canada and Rosa Toro avenues near the San Luis and San Borja districts. Two individuals on a motorcycle fired approximately three shots at the vehicle while it was stopped at a red light, striking the driver’s cabin and the second floor. No injuries or fatalities were reported reported. On September 11, an armed individual attacked a San Genaro transport bus in this second incident. the Chorrillos district. The assailant fired directly at the driver through an open door before firing more than five additional shots into the windows and seats. The bus was not carrying passengers at the time. The driver was transported to a medical center with a reserved prognosis. Local authorities suspect the attack is related to extortion.
