BYD vehicle recalls in China and Australia

BYD has initiated large-scale vehicle recalls in China and Australia. Australia due to distinct mechanical defects. In China, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) reported that manufacturing abnormalities in brake pedal limiter materials could cause parts to crack or detach. This defect may cause brake lights to remain illuminated even when the pedal is not pressed, creating a traffic safety hazard. The Chinese recall affects over 180,000 vehicles, primarily within the Tang and Qin series, including approximately 58,026 Tang models, 77,846 Tang DM models, 7,023 Tang EV models, and 40,316 Qin sedan models produced between 2014 and 2022. Regulators noted that constant brake light activation is dangerous as it can “confuse and mislead following drivers.” BYD has committed to replacing the faulty components free of charge. These affected units were manufactured specifically for the Chinese market. In Australia, BYD is recalling approximately 32,000 Shark 6 plug-in hybrid pickups manufactured between August 2024 and June 2026. The recall addresses a defect in the under-car spare wheel storage system, where incorrect installation or insufficient fastening torque could cause the support cable to wear abnormally. This issue may lead to the spare wheel falling off the vehicle, posing a risk of serious injury or death. This follows reports from owners regarding spare tyres becoming loose or swinging during transit. BYD intends to replace the spare wheel lifter assembly with a sturdier chain at no cost to owners. Affected Australian owners are advised to contact local dealerships and, in the interim, remove the spare wheel from the vehicle for safety.
