One month after the magnitude 7.4 earthquake centered in San José del Palmar, Chocó, Colombia is transitioning from emergency response to a massive reconstruction phase. The disaster, described by the Servicio Geológico Colombiano as the worst of the 21st century in the country, has resulted in 331 deaths, 4,505 injuries, and 111 missing persons according to the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD). The scale of destruction is vast, impacting 466,709 people across 16 departments and 498 municipalities. In Cali, demolition efforts have intensified. Following technical evaluations of over a thousand reported properties, the number of structures approved for demolition has increased from 17 to 36. Efforts are concentrated in areas such as the Los Cámbulos neighborhood, with notable structures including the Hotel Metrópolis, D’Corpus, and Cali Express slated for intervention. The Multifamiliar Los Laureles is expected to be demolished via implosion, with each demolition in Cali estimated to cost between 1 billion and 2 billion pesos. In Dosquebradas, authorities have completed 34 of an estimated 110 demolitions, utilizing 2.9 billion pesos from municipal resources. Mayor Roberto Jiménez Naranjo stated that the process follows strict technical and legal protocols to ensure the safety of surrounding communities. As demolition and debris removal continue, residents of the Guadalupe Residential Complex in Cali have raised concerns regarding the fate of personal belongings. Families report that household items have been removed from homes without clear information on their location or custody. Due to the risk of structural collapse, residents are prohibited from entering the complex, and the community has filed formal petitions to demand a formal inventory to ensure the traceability and eventual return of their property. Recent updates indicate that Cali has identified 60 structures for demolition, with 36 approved and 24 awaiting authorization.
