California clean energy transition and grid storage

Overview

California is navigating various challenges and successes in its transition toward a clean energy economy and grid stability.

Initial reports highlighted hurdles regarding resource extraction and long-term storage. While vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programs were identified as a potential way to meet one-third of the state’s long-duration energy storage targets by 2036, lithium extraction efforts faced legal setbacks. An appellate court overturned approvals for a major project in the ‘Lithium Valley’ region near the Salton Sea due to concerns over air quality and water usage.

Despite these extraction and regulatory difficulties, the state has seen significant success in grid resiliency through expanded battery storage capacity. Following a 2020 heat wave that caused rotating outages for 800,000 customers when storage was below 100 megawatts, capacity has grown to between 17,000 MW and 21,000 MW. This expansion allowed the state to avoid power outages during a record-breaking August heat wave by capturing solar energy for release during peak demand periods.
