California is experiencing legislative debate and public scrutiny regarding various public safety and surveillance measures.

Lawmakers are considering a bill to restrict the use of automated license-plate readers (ALPRs). While law enforcement agencies utilize the technology to solve crimes, privacy advocates argue it facilitates unwarranted surveillance. The proposed legislation seeks to limit data retention periods and control access and sharing protocols. This measure faces opposition from police agencies and officers’ unions.

Simultaneously, public safety policy is being challenged through protests and audits. Demonstrators have gathered to oppose Proposition 57, arguing it prioritizes juvenile rehabilitation over accountability for violent crimes. In the legislature, efforts include a requested audit of the Board of State and Community Corrections to evaluate the impact of Proposition 47 funds on crime and recidivism. While some measures, such as Kayleigh’s Law, have passed the State Senate, others, like the MAST Act aimed at combating human trafficking, have failed to advance in the Assembly.
