Cambodia-Thailand border dispute

Armed clashes in July 2025 left about 150 dead and displaced 300,000 people along the Thailand‑Cambodia frontier. A ceasefire signed on 27 December 2025 has held, though tensions remain high.

In July 2026 Thailand completed the first 1.3 km segment of a permanent border fence in Chanthaburi province, describing it as robust and capable of withstanding small‑arms fire. The project is intended to be extended piecemeal, with provisional barriers used where the line is disputed.

A week later, reports noted that the dispute remains unresolved a year after the ceasefire. Border crossings stay largely closed, forcing roughly 900,000 migrant workers to return to Cambodia and straining the Cambodian economy. Talks on demarcation have stalled, with Cambodia demanding Thailand halt unilateral construction and Thailand insisting on addressing all issues at once. The Joint Boundary Commission remains deadlocked, and no substantive dialogue has resumed.
