Cameroon Anglophone crisis

Overview

Marking ten years since its onset in October 2016, the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon continues to see conflicting narratives regarding its origins and impact. The conflict began following legal and educational disputes in the Northwest and Southwest regions, specifically involving protests by lawyers and teachers against the perceived erosion of the Common law system.

Human rights organizations, including the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy in Africa, have released data documenting approximately 4,000 reported deaths linked to the conflict, though some estimates suggest the total death toll could reach between 6,500 and 10,000.

In contrast to descriptions of the crisis as a social protest, a senior official from the Ministry of Defense, Cyrille Atonfack Guemo, has characterized the movement as a “premeditated insurrection.” Guemo asserts that armed groups possess complex command structures and engage in a “regime of terror” involving the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of civilians.
