Cameroon-EU economic and trade relations
Overview
Cameroon is undergoing a transition in its economic relationship with the European Union, moving from a model primarily driven by grants toward a focus on private-sector investment and large-scale infrastructure.
As part of the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA), the country is implementing the eleventh phase of tariff dismantling, which includes a 70% reduction in customs duties for specific products such as fuels, cement, and vehicles. While essential goods remain exempt, the progressive liberalization of sensitive goods has resulted in cumulative fiscal losses exceeding 100 billion FCFA.
In tandem with these trade shifts, the EU continues to support development through the Global Gateway strategy, with €244 million allocated under the 2021-2027 framework. Current investment priorities include regional connectivity and energy projects, such as the 420-MW Nachtigal hydroelectric project and bridge construction over the Logone and Ntem rivers.
