Various pilgrimage routes within the Camino de Santiago network are being highlighted for their unique landscapes and difficulty levels. The Camino de Santiago del Norte, a UNESCO World Heritage route, provides a secluded alternative to the traditional Camino Francés. Spanning over 800 kilometers along the Cantabrian coast through the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias, and Galicia, the path is noted for having approximately 60% less crowding than the traditional route. Due to its mix of mountains and coastal cliffs, it requires moderate to high physical preparation. To obtain the Compostela title on this route, pilgrims must complete the final 100 kilometers, typically starting from Vilalba in Lugo. Similarly, the Camino de Invierno offers a solitary experience through the four provinces of Galicia. This route is characterized by steep climbs and descents, starting in Ponferrada and passing through the Valdeorras region. The path includes significant landmarks such as Las Médulas, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its Roman gold mining history. Recent travelers on the Camiño de Inverno, including groups from Tenerife and Asturias, have praised the route for its tranquility and the ability to walk through small villages with minimal congestion. However, as the route gains popularity, some pilgrims have expressed concerns regarding future development. They suggest that while improved services are necessary, the path must avoid the “massification” seen on other routes to preserve its essential character of quietude and small-group experiences.
