Internacional’s struggle to escape the relegation zone continued on September 5 during a crucial confrontation against Santos at the Beira-Rio stadium. Despite playing without Neymar, who remains sidelined with a muscle injury, Santos secured a 3-2 victory through two goals from Gabigol and one from Christian Oliva. The match was marked by a red card for Matheus Bahia and a dominant first half by the visitors. Although Internacional attempted a second-half comeback with goals from Aguirre and Bruno Henrique, the result left them in 18th place with 25 points, extending a ten-match winless streak. The victory moved Santos to 12th place with 32 points, while the club also marked the debuts of new signings Arthur and Lima. On September 12, Internacional finally broke their ten-match winless streak in the Campeonato Brasileiro with a 2-1 victory over Chapecoense at the Arena Condá. Bruno Henrique scored in the 25th minute, and Carbonero secured the win with a goal in the 22nd minute of the second half, despite a stoppage-time equalizer from Chapecoense’s Maurício Garcez. The match was also characterized by two physical altercations between players and staff during both halves. Despite this win, Internacional remains in 18th place with 28 points, tied with Vasco, Mirassol, and Grêmio. According to the Department of Mathematics at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), the club still faces a 73.4% chance of relegation. Manager Paulo Pezzolano, who has ~~faced significant pressure,~~ addressed rumors regarding the club's search for a new manager, stated that he is not bothered by the possibility of the board looking for other coaches, noting that it is normal for clubs to prepare for different scenarios. He emphasized that while the result is important, ~~it does not provide total relief, noting that~~ the team must continue to evolve to avoid relegation.
