Campus antisemitism and institutional responses

Reports of rising antisemitism on university campuses in the United States and Canada have triggered significant legal, legislative, and institutional debates regarding student safety and free speech.

In the United States, the California Faculty Association supported AB 2551, a bill that sought to repeal certain campus-safety protections in the California Education Code. While the repeal language was removed following public outcry, the measure continued to advance. This legislative activity occurs amid reports from student leaders of widespread antisemitic incidents, including threats and hateful signage at various institutions such as UC Santa Barbara, NYU, and Stanford. A 2026 Brandeis University study indicated that nearly half of Jewish undergraduates reported experiencing prejudice.

Legal disputes are increasingly impacting educational institutions. Several small liberal arts colleges, including Reed College and Haverford College, have reached agreements to resolve complaints alleging inadequate protection for Jewish students following the October 7 attacks. These cases, often brought by organizations like the Anti-Defamation League and the Brandeis Center, utilize Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to argue that universities must prevent discrimination based on shared ancestry or national origin. Meanwhile, Harvard University faces significant financial strain due to a prolonged legal dispute with the Trump administration, which has resulted in slowed federal funding affecting research and scholarships.

In Canada, an independent review by Justice Mary Lou Benotto found that Toronto Metropolitan University failed to enforce existing policies regarding antisemitic hate incidents. In response, the university president appointed a task force to create an implementation plan by March 2027.
