Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a 100 million Canadian dollar pledge at the United Nations General Assembly to support Palestinians and the possibility of a two-state solution. The funding is split between humanitarian aid (80 percent) and peace and security initiatives (20 percent), such as training Palestinian police in the West Bank. Carney expressed concern regarding human suffering in Gaza and existential threats facing Israelis. He also criticized the E1 settlement project and signaled Canada’s intention to implement trade restrictions on goods produced in illegal Israeli settlements, aligning the country with 11 other states that have announced similar measures. This commitment follows reports that various international aid projects in Palestinian territories have been “damaged, destroyed, or abandoned” by the Israeli military and settlers. NDP MP Heather McPherson specifically reported that the Israeli military and settlers have damaged dozens of Canadian-funded aid projects. While Canada is among the nations implementing trade restrictions, the government has not yet decided whether to seek compensation from Israel for damaged assets or fund repairs. During the same UN General Assembly session, French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the global community for the insufficient delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.
