Canada energy export diversification amid US trade tensions
Overview
Geopolitical and trade tensions between the United States and Canada have prompted a strategic shift in Canadian energy policy. Following the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration on various Canadian products, Canada is seeking to reduce its economic dependence on the U.S. by diversifying its energy export markets toward Asia.
In Alberta, leadership has signaled intentions to double oil production, supported by plans for extensive pipeline networks. To facilitate access to Asian markets, including China, proposals have emerged for interprovincial pipelines capable of transporting one million barrels of crude oil per day from Edmonton to deep-water ports in British Columbia. Ongoing infrastructure developments, such as the Trans Mountain pipeline, aim to increase Canadian export capacity by up to 2.25 million barrels per day by 2035.
Recent developments indicate that Ottawa is intensifying these efforts due to American trade pressures and Middle East tensions. Currently, approximately 90% of Canadian crude oil exports and nearly all natural gas exports are directed to the U.S. To counter this, the government is focusing on expanding Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects, which could allow more than half of Canada’s gas exports to reach markets outside the U.S.
To support these goals, the Canadian government aims to accelerate energy project licensing, reducing review times from several years to approximately one year, while providing tax incentives for investments in wells, pipelines, and processing facilities. Estimates suggest that planned expansions could increase Canada’s oil transport capacity to 6.8 million barrels per day by 2034, with 30% of that capacity directed toward the West Coast and Asian markets.
