Canada international student regulation changes
Overview
Effective September 1, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has implemented new regulations for international students to address the cost of living and improve the integrity of the study permit process.
As part of an annual adjustment, the financial requirement for a single student studying outside Quebec has increased by C$553, bringing the total required living expense threshold to C$23,448. Requirements for families have also scaled upward, with C$29,192 required for two people and C$35,888 for three. These amounts are strictly for living expenses and are separate from tuition and transportation costs.
Beyond financial adjustments, the IRCC is intensifying compliance investigations, specifically targeting high-risk study permit renewals and those processed through the Student Direct Stream (SDS). To further ensure accuracy, a new centralized verification mechanism has been introduced to validate Letters of Acceptance against school records. The department noted that providing inaccurate information may lead to findings of misrepresentation.
