Canada skilled trades workforce initiatives

Overview

The Canadian federal government has introduced multiple funding initiatives to bolster the skilled trades sector. In September 2026, an $880 million plan was announced to provide young workers with paid, on-the-job experience through placements lasting up to four months. This effort is part of a broader $8 billion allocation intended to recruit and train professionals such as electricians, carpenters, and welders.

In October 2026, the government announced an additional $430 million over five years specifically to support skilled trades training through an expansion of the Union Training and Innovation Program. This funding is directed toward unions and non-profit organizations, excluding Quebec, to assist with training facilities, equipment costs, and recruitment innovation. The equipment funding stream includes a temporary increase in government coverage from 50 per cent to 70 per cent.
