Bald Range wildfire and Summerland recovery update

The Bald Range wildfire, which began on August 7, has burned approximately ~~25,191~~ 25,163 hectares and destroyed about 150 structures. While the fire is currently classified as ‘Being Held’, it remains out of control in some capacities. The blaze resulted in one death in the Meadow Valley area and displaced an estimated 20,000 people, including the entire community of Summerland. Recent developments show a shift toward recovery. Evacuation orders for most of Summerland have been downgraded, allowing many residents to return home. Notably, on August 28, a group of 30 seniors returned to the Summerland Seniors Village after spending nearly three weeks in temporary accommodations in Osoyoos. As of August 31, suppression and mop-up operations are ongoing. The BC Wildfire Service has deployed 322 wildland firefighters, four helicopters, and 31 pieces of heavy equipment to extinguish remaining heat near the fire’s edge. While structure protection equipment has been demobilized, heavy equipment and water tenders remain active. To prevent traffic congestion for emergency crews, authorities continue to request that the public avoid the area. To ensure firefighter safety and prevent interference with suppression operations, the BC Wildfire Service has issued an area restriction order for the zone approximately 15 kilometres west of Summerland. Effective from 12 p.m. on August 29, the order is scheduled to remain in place until September 12, 2026, unless rescinded earlier. Financial recovery efforts continue, with the federal government pledging a dollar-for-dollar match for Red Cross fire appeal donations collected between August 4 and September 5. Summerland officials are currently developing a formal recovery plan to address the loss of farms, buildings, and community infrastructure.
