Canadian airport privatization opposition

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) issued a report titled ‘Public Runways, Private Profits: Why Airport Privatization Would Be Risky and Costly for Canadians’, warning that privatizing national airports could result in higher passenger fares, job losses, and diminished public value. The CLC noted that private investors might require 15% to 20% more revenue than current not-for-profit models to provide competitive returns, citing examples from Australia where airline revenue per passenger rose significantly following privatization.

Following these warnings, the New Democratic Party (NDP) and labor representatives formally opposed a federal plan to permit private investment in Canada’s four largest airports. NDP leader Avi Lewis described the proposal as privatization, calling the government’s claim that the public would retain land and building ownership “a distinction without a difference.”

Labor leaders, including Unifor’s aviation council chair Tammy Moore, raised concerns regarding increased precarious contract employment and staffing cuts intended to maximize profits. Additionally, the NDP expressed opposition to Bill C-39, arguing it could expand federal powers to intervene in labor disputes and weaken collective bargaining rights.
