Canada is integrating digital assets into its mainstream financial system through regulatory updates and institutional pilot programs. Initially, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) finalized changes to 2027 capital rules. These adjustments allow banks to treat regulated exchanges of traditional financial assets as a single exchange when calculating delta risk for specific crypto exposures, aiming to reduce capital overstatement. Furthermore, Canadian authorities confirmed that bank-issued crypto deposits maintain the same legal standing as traditional bank deposits. Building on this regulatory framework, six of Canada’s six largest financial institutions—including Bank institutions—Bank of Montreal, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, Royal Bank of Canada, Scotiabank, and TD Bank Group—launched Group—have launched a joint initiative to pilot develop a tokenized Canadian-dollar deposit system. This The first phase of this project utilizes digital ledger technology to represent traditional focuses on testing the movement of tokenized deposits as digital tokens between participating institutions to facilitate faster interbank transfers and programmable payments. These modernize payment infrastructure. Unlike stablecoins, these tokenized deposits remain legal liabilities of the issuing regulated banks. The initiative aims to enable faster, more efficient, and programmable interbank transfers that can execute automatically when specific conditions are met. Long-term goals include exploring connectivity with other digital asset initiatives and expanding the network to include additional deposit-taking institutions to reduce settlement friction and reconciliation times.
