Canadian cannabis and brain health research initiative

Overview

The Canadian government has announced a CAD 24 million investment to establish the Canadian Cannabis and Brain Health Consortium. Funded through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the initiative brings together ten multidisciplinary research teams from various universities to study the relationship between cannabis use and brain health.

The research aims to build a long-term national resource by pooling data across provinces and territories. Key areas of investigation include the effects of cannabis during pregnancy, early childhood, and aging, as well as its impact on neurocognitive development, sleep, and mental health. Specific medical conditions such as epilepsy, psychosis, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will also be studied.

To ensure comprehensive data collection, researchers plan to recruit over 3,000 participants. The initiative also intends to include historically underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous Peoples and individuals with rare or complex medical histories, in the research process.
