Energy infrastructure in Western Canada is seeing significant expansion, particularly regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG) and natural gas liquids (NGL). In Alberta, Wolf Midstream has approved a $500 million expansion of its NGL network to increase processing and production capacity. In British Columbia, the Shell-led LNG Canada joint venture—comprising Shell (40%), Petronas (25%), PetroChina (15%), Mitsubishi Corp (15%), and Korea Gas Corp (5%)—has reached a final investment decision (FID) to proceed with Phase 2 of the project in Kitimat. This expansion is intended to double the facility’s annual capacity from 14 million to approximately 28 million metric tons of LNG. The project involves constructing two additional processing trains, a new storage tank, a condensate tank, and a loading berth. To support the increased output, TC Energy will advance Phase 2 of the Coastal GasLink pipeline, including the construction of five new compressor stations. The Canadian government estimates the total private sector investment for the LNG Canada project could reach approximately 33 billion Canadian dollars (23.2 billion USD). The expansion is expected to create substantial employment, with up to 4,000 construction jobs anticipated during peak periods, followed by roughly 90 permanent positions and 150 contractor roles in the Kitimat area. Commercial operations for Phase 2 are targeted to begin in the early 2030s, aiming to meet rising demand in Asian markets. The project is viewed as a strategic move to position Canada as a major global energy exporter and a reliable supplier amid global energy security concerns. The expansion has received support from the Canadian federal government and British Columbia.
