The Liberal Party of Canada secured victories in all three federal byelections held on August 31, 2026, increasing their House of Commons seat count to 173. In North Vancouver-Capilano, Braeden Caley won the seat with 58.6 per cent of the vote, defeating Conservative candidate Stephen Curran, who received 29.2 per cent. The seat had been vacant since former MP Jonathan Wilkinson accepted an appointment as Canada’s Ambassador to the European Union. Caley, a former deputy chief of staff to Prime Minister Mark Carney, described the win as a “mandate for partnership and a rejection of division” amid trade tensions with the United States. In the other contested ridings, Tanveer Shahnawaz won in Beaches-East York, Ontario, with 55.7 per cent of the vote, and Daniel Gobeil won in Chicoutimi—Le Fjord, Quebec, with 51.3 per cent of the vote. Following the results, Prime Minister Carney stated that the outcomes indicate voters have “placed their trust in the government’s current plan.” Concurrent with the election results, the RCMP is investigating allegations involving British Columbia Conservative Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Delta South MLA Ian Paton has confirmed he is scheduled for an RCMP interview regarding claims that Findlay offered him a paid advisory position, including a salary of approximately $122,000, in exchange for his resignation. Findlay has dismissed the allegations as a “political smear job,” maintaining that the discussions were ethical and legal.
