Official selections include Nyla Innuksuk’s ‘In the Heart of the South’ and Alexandra Lazarowich’s ‘Turtle Island Rap.’ Supported by the Indigenous Film Office (ISO) and federal financing, these initiatives aim to provide First Nations filmmakers with larger budgets and platforms to tell stories in their own languages. ISO CEO Kerri Swanson noted growing momentum in the success of Indigenous filmmaking, bolstered by support intended to foster reconciliation. TIFF continued continues its programming through September 20, highlighting regional talent such as Winnipeg filmmaker Ian Bawa, who is set to debut his feature film ‘Strong Son’.
