Canadian law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to address dangerous driving behaviors. In Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police recently charged three individuals for stunt driving on Highway 401, with speeds recorded between 158 km/h and 178 km/h, resulting in license suspensions and vehicle impoundments. In British Columbia, the RCMP and BC Highway Patrol have launched a specific campaign throughout September targeting distracted driving and seatbelt compliance. Authorities identified distracted driving as one of the top three causes of road fatalities in the province. Superintendent Lori Orstad stated the initiative aims to “educate through enforcement” to address drivers who create their own exceptions to safety laws. Penalties for violations include fines for electronic device usage, seatbelt non-compliance, and improper child restraint systems. Expanding on these efforts, the BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) launched the ‘Drive Relative to Conditions’ campaign in October. This initiative focuses on drivers traveling at speeds unsafe for current road, traffic, visibility, or weather conditions. Authorities noted that posted speed limits are designed for ideal conditions, and driving too quickly for bad weather or darkness is a Motor Vehicle Act offence carrying a $196 fine. As temperatures drop, enforcement also targets winter preparedness. Effective October 1, winter tires or chains are required on most B.C. routes. The BCHP is coordinating with partners like Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement to ensure motorists maintain functional headlights, wipers, and brakes, and clear snow and ice from vehicles before travel.
