Canal del Henares irrigation community centenary
Overview
The Canal del Henares irrigation community is preparing to celebrate its centenary on September 23 at the Centro de Investigación Apícola y Agroambiental (CIAPA) in Marchamalo. The event, themed ‘Un siglo transformando el agua en futuro’, commemorates 100 years of collective water management.
The 40-kilometer infrastructure serves approximately 6,500 hectares across municipalities in Guadalajara and parts of Madrid, supporting roughly 1,500 members. The system is notable for using the dam’s natural elevation to distribute water through three irrigation sectors without requiring energy consumption for conduction.
President Ángel Estremera stated that the organization remains focused on its transformative mission. Current objectives include infrastructure conservation, increasing irrigation efficiency, and adapting agricultural practices to address increasingly scarce water resources. As part of the anniversary, an initiative has been launched to collect historical and contemporary photographs of the canal and its surrounding environment.
