Canary Islands agricultural products EU protection bid

Efforts are underway to secure European Union Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status for agricultural products from the Canary Islands.

Initially, the Canary Islands government submitted a dossier for ‘Café de Agaete’ to the European Commission. This application, supported by the Association Agroagaete and the Agaete City Council, passed the national public information phase without objection. If validated, the coffee would become the only variety in Spain to hold such a community seal.

Subsequently, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food expanded these efforts by submitting applications for both ‘Café de Agaete’ and ‘Tomate Canario’ (Canary Tomato) to the European Commission. While both products currently hold transitional protection at the national level in Spain, the European Commission has a six-month window to evaluate the proposals. Approval would lead to a three-month period for public opposition at the EU level before definitive recognition is granted.
