In preparation for the Spanish general elections on November 29, political forces in the Canary Islands are forming competing nationalist coalitions. On October 16, four nationalist left-wing groups—Nueva Canarias-Bloque Canarista, Podemos, Izquierda Unida, and Movimiento Sumar—announced the formation of the ‘Unidad del Pueblo Canario’ (UPC) coalition. The alliance intends to provide a unified voice in the Congress of Deputies, focusing on housing rights and public services such as health and education. Concurrently, Coalición Canaria (CC) is working to build a separate nationalist alliance. Following a pact in Gran Canaria with Municipalistas Primero Canarias and various other organizations, CC is attempting to expand this unity agreement to include parties in Lanzarote. The CC-led group aims to present a joint candidacy to defend regional interests, with candidate Cristina Valido emphasizing the party’s autonomy from the PSOE and PP. On October 22, CC candidate Cristina Valido announced that the party will reject any Spanish government led by the People's Party (PP) if it includes Vox in the executive. Valido stated that Vox’s proposals, such as those regarding the Canary Islands' Statute of Autonomy, immigration management, and tax benefits, threaten regional rights and promote state recentralization. She also cited concerns regarding the privatization of pensions and budget cuts. Definitive negotiating lines will be established after the November 29 elections.
