The Canary Islands government issued a forest fire risk alert for Tenerife and Gran Canaria due to a “tropical-like heat episode” involving high temperatures, low humidity, and moderate winds. In Tenerife, the alert targeted summits and mid-altitude areas, while in Gran Canaria, the most severe conditions were expected in southwestern mid-altitude areas and summits, with temperatures potentially reaching 37 degrees Celsius. By September 10, the Dirección General de Emergencias announced the end of the forest fire risk alert for El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and portions of Gran Canaria. Effective September 11, these areas transitioned to a pre-alert status following improvements in temperature, humidity, and wind conditions. Emergency services continue to monitor meteorological conditions and vegetation. To bolster long-term safety, the Cabildo de Tenerife is launching a sensitization and self-protection plan designed to prepare citizens for fires, floods, and volcanic risks.
