The Canary Islands government previously issued forest fire risk alerts for Tenerife and Gran Canaria due to a “tropical-like heat episode.” By September 10, the Dirección General de Emergencias transitioned Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and parts of Gran Canaria to a pre-alert status as weather conditions improved. To support long-term safety, the Cabildo de Tenerife launched a sensitization and self-protection plan for fires, floods, and volcanic risks. However, the archipelago has since faced renewed wildfire risks driven by an intense heatwave and dry conditions caused by an African air mass, with temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius. The Canary Islands Government has maintained fire alerts for Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, and Gran Canaria. In Gran Canaria, authorities stabilized a fire in the palm groves of El Ingenio, which required the evacuation of six homes and the deployment of approximately 60 personnel and aerial support. Another fire in Gáldar was also controlled. In Tenerife, the Island Council has activated Level 1 prevention measures across four sectors, prohibiting outdoor fires, smoking, and the use of certain machinery or pyrotechnics to minimize ignition risks. By September 27, weather patterns began to shift following the influence of moisture from the post-tropical cyclone Gonzalo. While the calima (dust haze) was expected to diminish, the archipelago faced a period of instability characterized by cloud cover, occasional showers, and isolated thunderstorms. Consequently, the Gran Canaria government officially ended the high-level forest fire alert, though a pre-alert remains in effect for the island and western islands due to lingering environmental dryness and high temperatures.
