Candida auris research and survival mechanisms
Overview
Scientific research has identified several ways the fungal pathogen Candida auris evades immune responses and medical treatments. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco discovered that the fungus triggers a specific immune response that facilitates colonization of hair follicles, contributing to its ability to infect healthy individuals and pose a threat to immunocompromised patients.
Further studies published in Nature Communications revealed that the fungus can create multiple copies of its entire genome, a mechanism that increases the likelihood of developing mutations to evade antifungal drugs.
While Candida auris has caused outbreaks in over 60 countries and is classified by the World Health Organization as a critical-priority pathogen, researchers are also investigating external contributing factors. Some studies suggest that climate change and rising global temperatures may assist the fungus in adapting to the human body, while the use of fungicides in agriculture remains under investigation.
