The study found that loud human voices and certain household sounds can induce fear and anxiety, manifesting in behaviors such as trembling, hiding, panting, or attempting to flee. Researchers noted that owners frequently misinterpret these stress responses as “mere playfulness or lack of discipline.” Furthermore, behaviors such as biting or leash pulling are often driven by stress, anxiety, or frustration rather than simple disobedience. Factors including boredom, overstimulation, or frustration from physical restraint—particularly in puppies—contribute to these actions. To manage such these behaviors, experts recommend veterinarian Julie Hunt notes that telling a stressed dog to ‘calm down’ can be counterproductive, as the use of positive reinforcement command may increase pressure on the animal’s amygdala.
