Capcom has announced the REX Project (RE neXt Engine), an initiative to evolve its proprietary RE Engine into an “AI-generation game engine.” Unveiled by programmer Satoshi Ishida at the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, the project aims to modernize workflows to address the increasing complexity, data sizes, and long production cycles of modern AAA games. Rather than using generative AI to create final art assets or models, Capcom intends to use artificial intelligence as an internal tool to assist developers. The focus is on automating repetitive technical tasks, such as bug tracking, automated testing, code refactoring, and performance profiling. This approach is designed to help the company’s 2,000-plus developers manage massive amounts of data and streamline communication across diverse international teams. The REX initiative includes several specialized sub-programs: RE:Dox for unifying data structures, RE:UI for flexible developer interfaces, RE:Log for centralized error tracking, RE:Flows for converting visual scripting into standard code, and RE:Runtime for more efficient handling of large numbers of objects and characters. The update will be implemented in phases rather than a complete replacement of the existing engine. To facilitate easier integration for both human developers and AI systems, some of these components are being released as open source. source to facilitate AI training. Programmer Satoshi Ishida noted that integrating AI technology has become an “essential condition” for streamlining future development as games become larger and more complex.
