On the night of October 25, 2026, a driver intentionally drove a vehicle into a group of people on Mecklenhorster Straße in Neustadt am Rübenberge. The driver struck the group, reversed, and hit them a second time. The incident resulted in at least five individuals sustaining light to serious injuries, though none were reported to be in life-threatening condition. Police officers conducting a routine traffic check witnessed the attack and opened fire on the vehicle. The suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a damaged blue BMW. Investigators from the Hannover Public Prosecutor's Office are treating the incident as attempted murder. Authorities believe the attack was not a random act of terrorism, as the perpetrators and victims appear to have known one another. Police have noted a potential connection to clan-related criminality, as the suspects belong to large families previously known to law enforcement. Following a manhunt, three individuals were apprehended at the vehicle owner's address. Local CDU leader Sebastian Lechner confirmed that such family structures are known in the area. On October 28, authorities clarified the status of the investigation. While initial reports indicated multiple detainees, officials confirmed that the driver has been specifically arrested and is now in custody. The driver faces charges of attempted manslaughter in five cases.
