Reports have emerged regarding significant billing errors involving car rental customers in North America. In Canada, a customer Toronto resident named Yuehao Huang was incorrectly charged billed approximately 5,900 Canadian dollars by Avis for nearly 30,000 kilometers of travel excessive mileage. The company claimed that during a one-week rental. seven-day trip in September, Huang had driven 28,933 kilometers. Huang contested the charge, noting his actual trip through Montreal, Mont-Tremblant, Ottawa, and Quebec City totaled a maximum of 1,400 kilometers. The charge implied an impossible average billed distance would have required driving speed of 172 at 180 km/h continuously for 168 consecutive hours. 24 hours a day without stopping for fuel or sleep. Following a dispute with the rental company and the customer’s bank, and subsequent media intervention, the company Avis acknowledged a the data entry error, issued an apology, and promised a refund. In the United States, a Hertz customer reported an unresolved charge of $1,367.38 for a vehicle they claim they never rented. The customer provided evidence, including flight tickets, to show the rental dates for the disputed vehicle did not align with their presence in Seattle. While Hertz customer relations indicated an adjustment was processed, the customer has not received the refund. A stalemate exists between the rental company and the customer’s bank, Chase, regarding the confirmation of the transaction.
