Carbon capture and CO2 repurposing technology developments
Overview
Developments in carbon capture and repurposing technologies are being implemented across various sectors and regions to mitigate climate change and address resource shortages.
In the Netherlands, thirteen greenhouse companies have received SDE++ subsidies to implement direct air capture (DAC) technology. This initiative seeks to capture atmospheric CO2 to use as a fertilizer, addressing a projected shortage as the industry transitions away from fossil-fuel-based energy sources. The sector is also evaluating hydrogen as a long-term strategic energy option.
In Germany, a pilot plant at the Bülk sewage treatment plant in Kiel is testing a system that captures CO2 from biogas-burning power plants. The process converts CO2 and water into bicarbonate, which is then discharged into the Baltic Sea for long-term storage. Simultaneously, researchers are investigating the use of silver nanoparticles as electrocatalysts to reduce CO2 into carbon monoxide. This electrolysis process aims to produce synthetic “green” cooking fuels for rural regions in South Africa.
