Cardiovascular disease prevention in Portugal

Overview

In Portugal, the Portuguese Society of Cardiology (SPC) is advocating for a national cardiovascular screening program following an increase in cardiovascular events and sudden deaths among younger populations. The SPC proposes regular assessments of blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol starting at age 35 through pharmacies and health centers.

Cristina Gavina, president of the SPC, linked this trend to obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and rising rates of diabetes and pre-diabetes. With cardiovascular diseases causing over 33,000 deaths annually in the country, experts suggest that 80% of premature deaths could be prevented through lifestyle changes and risk factor control.

To address these issues, the ‘Viva Sem Pressão’ (Live Without Pressure) awareness campaign has been launched. Coordinated by cardiologist Ricardo Santos, the initiative focuses on the ‘silent’ nature of high blood pressure to encourage early diagnosis and regular monitoring.
