The Caribbean tourism market is experiencing a shift in visitor demographics and destination preferences. While overall regional demand grew by only 1 percent year-over-year between April 2025 and March 2026, smaller islands such as Dominica and Sint Maarten have seen significant visitor increases of 22 percent and 18 percent, respectively. Latin American markets are becoming increasingly vital, with demand rising 24 percent. This is largely driven by a 117 percent surge in premium travel from South America, particularly from Peru and Argentina. This trend occurs as traditional markets in the U.S., Canada, and Europe show plateauing growth. In the Dominican Republic, tourism officials continue to drive growth through international roadshows and infrastructure investment. Minister David Collado reported record visitor numbers, with 11.67 million visitors in 2025 and over 9.24 million arrivals recorded between January and September 2026. To support local communities, Collado has inaugurated several projects in Boca Chica, including the renovation of the San Rafael Arcángel parish, the Los Caracoles plaza, and two municipal parks, representing an investment of over RD$76 million. Additionally, the Ministry of Tourism concluded a RD$61.5 million street rehabilitation phase in the Colonial City to improve urban mobility and heritage preservation. Beyond tourism, the Dominican Republic is expanding its broader public infrastructure. Recent developments include the RD$141 million expansion of the San Vicente de Paúl Educational Center Center, which includes 12 new classrooms and a technical vocational school, and the inauguration of the Orlando Martínez Primary School. Social welfare efforts have seen the delivery of 836 apartments in the Ciudad Real Ecológica project, while healthcare improvements include a planned RD$489 million renovation of the Jacinto Mañón Maternal and Child Hospital. Additionally, a tender has been issued for the RD$70 million restoration of the historic Club de Comercio in Puerto Plata. Meanwhile, in Mexico, the state of Morelos has introduced a five-pillar strategy focused on social tourism to increase public access to cultural spaces and create local economic opportunities.
