Caste discrimination allegations at NLU Prayagraj

Overview

The Allahabad High Court has initiated legal proceedings to investigate allegations of caste-based discrimination and humiliation at Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University (RPNLU) in Prayagraj.

Following petitions from a PhD scholar and a law student, the court ordered the formation of two separate committees. One independent committee is tasked with conducting a masked re-evaluation of student answer sheets to determine if academic results were unfairly influenced by caste. A second inquiry, led by Judge Archana Singh-I and Special Chief Judicial Magistrate Arun Kumar Yadav, will investigate whether students from Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes were targeted by the Head of the Department of Law and hostel warden, Dr. Deepak Sharma.

As a result of the order, Dr. Sharma is to be relieved of all administrative duties pending the investigation. The court mandated that the inquiry remain impartial and protect the identities of student witnesses, with final reports to be submitted in a sealed cover.
