Catalan agricultural sector distress

Agricultural producers in Catalonia are facing significant economic and operational challenges driven by climate conditions and market imbalances. In the viticulture sector, the Junts parliamentary group has criticized existing government measures as insufficient, citing an imbalance between grape supply and wine demand alongside excess stocks. Additionally, the Unió de Pagesos union has warned of potential mobilizations if the government fails to provide drought-relief aid for almond and carob growers, who have seen yields drop by as much as 80 percent due to the 2022–2024 dry spell.

Further complicating the situation, ecological livestock farming is under threat from extreme heat and a lack of rainfall, which has reduced natural forage by nearly 50 percent in some northern mountain areas. To prevent farm closures, the organization Joves Agricultors i Ramaders de Catalunya (JARC) is requesting that the Department of Agriculture allow affected farms to use conventional feed temporarily without losing their organic certification, citing provisions in European law for climate disasters.
