Various regions are holding historical and cultural commemorations related to Catalan history and the medieval period. In Alghero, celebrations marked the anniversary of the 1960 ‘Reencontro’, an event involving Catalan intellectuals that helped end the city’s cultural isolation. In Salou, festivities centered on the 31st King Jaume I Festival, which commemorates the 1229 departure of King Jaume I for the conquest of Mallorca. The XXXI Festa del Rei Jaume I, running from September 3 to 6, features a medieval setting with a market of nearly 100 stalls, expert conferences, and historical displays such as catapults and wheeled towers. To educate the public on 13th-century Mediterranean society, participants engage in processions and reenactments wearing authentic period clothing, including knights, doctors, and officials. Building on these historical themes, Salou is preparing for the 40th edition of the Regata Rei en Jaume. Scheduled to begin on September 11, the sailing competition will see between 20 and 24 vessels depart from the port of Salou for a course of over 100 nautical miles toward Dragonera and Mallorca. This milestone edition, which will bring the total number of historical participants in the regatta to over 500, commemorates the 1229 expedition led by King Jaume I. Simultaneously, Mallorca organized the Diada de Mallorca 2026 to honor the historical roots of the Kingdom of Mallorca. This program commemorates the anniversary of King Jaume II swearing the Charter of Privileges and Exemptions in 1276, as well as the centenary of the first public performance of the island’s anthem, ‘La Balanguera’. Activities include coronation representations, a floral offering at the Cathedral, and official awards ceremonies such as the Jaume II Awards and Medals of Honor.
