Healthcare facilities in Côte d’Ivoire and Italy have introduced or expanded cataract surgery services to improve patient access. In Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the Treichville University Hospital launched a humanitarian campaign to provide free consultations and surgeries for 800 patients. Funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, the initiative aims to assist vulnerable populations. Organizers noted that all services are free and cautioned the public against scams requesting payments or electronic transfers. The current campaign, running from October 31 to November 13, 2026, represents the third edition of the “Nour Al-Saudia” project. It is implemented by the Al-Basar International Foundation in collaboration with the National Eye Health Program (PNSO) and local medical teams. Ivorian Minister of Health Pierre Dimba attended the launch on November 4, 2026, noting the importance of the initiative for quality of life and calling for the transfer of medical skills to local providers. This mission follows previous campaigns held in 2022 and 2024. In Iglesias, Italy, the CTO Hospital expanded its ophthalmology department to include surgical procedures for cataracts. This development is intended to serve local residents, particularly the elderly in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, by reducing the need to travel to external facilities and helping to decrease waiting lists.
