Cathay Pacific surcharge hike and profit surge

Overview

In late July 2026 Cathay Pacific announced a strong profit outlook, a redesign of its A321neo cabins and a passenger‑fuel surcharge increase effective 1 August. Long‑haul fees were set at US$175 (HK$1,362) and short‑haul rates for South‑Asia and other routes at $81 and $44, still below European rivals. The airline said hedge‑covered fuel costs helped offset a sharp oil‑price rise linked to renewed Middle‑East tensions.

The profit forecast was lifted to HK$60‑65 billion (a 62‑76 % YoY rise). First‑half attributable profit came in at HK$6.2 billion, a 71 % jump, with revenue of HK$68 billion (+25.3 %). Passenger revenue grew 26.3 % to HK$43.2 billion and traffic rose 17.5 %, while low‑cost subsidiary HK Express added 9.8 % more passengers. Jet‑fuel costs nearly doubled, climbing 59 % year‑on‑year due to the Iran‑related war, prompting multiple fuel‑surcharge adjustments and the addition of extra Europe‑bound flights to capture shifting traffic.

Cathay declared an interim dividend of HK$0.26 per share (+30 %) and recorded a HK$1 billion non‑recurring gain from a partial disposal of its stake in Air China. It reaffirmed a HK$150 billion investment programme covering fleet renewal, cabin upgrades, lounge refurbishments and digital enhancements, and confirmed plans to add 150 new aircraft over the next ten years. The carrier reiterated the H1 figures on 5 August, underscoring the robustness of its outlook despite higher fuel costs.
