The Catholic Church in Honduras has issued several statements addressing social and economic dignity. Initially, the Episcopal Conference of Honduras (CEH) called for the restoration of the dignity and moral authority of educators, noting that teachers require better protection and recognition to fulfill their roles in nation-building. The CEH specifically highlighted the difficulties faced by rural teachers regarding infrastructure and materials. Following this, church leaders in Tegucigalpa expanded their focus to economic justice, advocating for fair wages. During a service at the San Miguel Arcángel Metropolitan Cathedral, the Church argued that remuneration should be based on human dignity and the needs of families rather than being dictated solely by market supply and demand. This position emphasized that wages should contribute to the common good, drawing on the concept of ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ to argue that justice should transcend purely mercantile exchanges. Most recently, Archbishop José Vicente Nácher reinforced these positions, emphasizing that wages must not be determined solely by market forces. Citing Catholic doctrine and the teachings of Pope Leo XIV, the Archbishop argued that a fair salary must prioritize human dignity to ensure that workers and their families can maintain a dignified life.
