The Catholic Church observes September as the Month of the Bible, a tradition designed to encourage engagement with Sacred Scriptures through prayer and meditation. This designation is linked to the feast of Saint Jerome on September 30, the patron saint of biblical scholars and translators. Jerome is recognized for his historical role in creating the Vulgate, a Latin translation of the Bible from Hebrew and Greek texts that served as the authoritative version for the Western Church for centuries. As a Doctor of the Church, Jerome’s legacy includes extensive theological writings, commentaries, and his service as an advisor to Pope Damasus I. In addition to the monthly observance, September 30 is celebrated as Catholic Bible Day. This day is intended to encourage the faithful to engage deeply with the Word of God, with various religious institutions using the occasion to reflect on the historical impact of Jerome’s linguistic contributions. To support this observance, these observances, the Archdiocese in Guadalajara released a Monthly Missal for September 2026 to assist parishioners with daily Eucharistic celebrations.
