The Catholic Church is celebrating the centenary of World Mission Sunday, observed on October 17-18, 2026. This milestone marks 100 years since the observance was established by Pope Pius XI in 1926. Under the theme ‘One in Christ, United in Mission,’ Pope Leo XIV has called for believers to engage in evangelization through both spiritual prayer and material aid, emphasizing that unity among disciples strengthens the impact of their testimony. Global observances have highlighted diverse regional responses. In Spain, the Pontifical Mission Societies launched the ‘El Domund al descubierto’ exhibition in Vitoria to showcase missionary work across Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania. In Mexico, Monsignor Víctor Sánchez Espinosa, Archbishop of Puebla, called on the faithful to be ‘missionary disciples’ in daily life and to pray for national peace. In Italy, dioceses held prayer vigils, including services in San Miniato and Carpi, the latter honoring the memory of Don Francesco Cavazzuti through symbolic tributes. Other regional activities included musical masses in Brazil, indigenous outreach in India, and community support initiatives in Paraguay and Bosnia and Herzegovina. To mark the centenary, the Apostolic Penitentiary granted a plenary indulgence to those participating devotedly in the Marian Rosary, receiving confession, and participating in Eucharistic Communion. As the initiative continues, the focus has shifted toward poverty relief in Madagascar, a nation facing hunger and malnutrition due to droughts and cyclones. In Germany, the Diocese of Fulda and missio Aachen are soliciting donations for social and pastoral work in impoverished regions. To highlight these needs, guests from Madagascar are participating in approximately 200 events across Germany to share local challenges and solutions, specifically regarding aid and education in the Archdioceses of Toliara and Toamasina.
