Catholic Church mental health ministry initiative

Overview

Pope Francis initiated a movement within the Catholic Church to integrate mental health pastoral care into its global mission. His prayer intention for October aimed to combat the stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness, noting that over one billion people worldwide are affected by mental disorders.

Following this call, the Vatican hosted a conference titled ‘A Healing Presence: The Church’s Call to Mental Health Ministry’ to coincide with World Mental Health Day. The gathering, organized by the International Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers in collaboration with other foundations, focused on addressing ‘invisible’ needs and providing support in regions impacted by war, violence, and poverty.

As part of these efforts, new educational resources were introduced, including online video courses on ‘mental health literacy’ and ‘psychological first aid’ to help individuals recognize symptoms and support those in distress.
